West Des Moines School Tax Levy, 2009
The West Des Moines School Tax Levy was on the September 8, 2009 primary election ballot in Polk County, Iowa in the city of West Des Moines, where it was approved.[1]
- Yes: 1,792 (71.5%)
- No: 714 (28.5%)
The measure will renew the school district's physical plant and equipment levy for the next ten years. The tax will be assessed on property to raise approximately $6 million each year to pay for the maintenance and updating of new equipment. The levy rate, according to reports, is $1.34 per $1,000 of "taxable property value" and was passed in 2001. Under Iowa state law, voter approval on the issue is required every ten years. School district officials have stated that during the first year of the new levy, they plan to spend at least $2 million of the accumulated revenue on new computers.
According to Drew McLellan, who helped spearhead the campaign for the levy:"I hope we did a good job of educating people, but parents in West Des Moines are also very supportive and plugged in. I think a lot of people live here because of the schools.”
