The West Virginia Sheriffs Term Limits for Appointed Sheriffs Amendment (2026) may be on the ballot in West Virginia as a legislatively referred constitutional amendment on November 3, 2026.
The constitutional amendment would amend the state constitution to provide that only U.S. citizens who are citizens of West Virginia are qualified to vote in elections held in the state.[1]

Path to the ballot
A two-thirds vote is required during one legislative session for the West Virginia State Legislature to place a constitutional amendment on the ballot. That amounts to a minimum of 67 votes in the West Virginia House of Representatives and 23 votes in the West Virginia State Senate, assuming no vacancies. Amendments do not require the governor's signature to be referred to the ballot.

- January 14, 2026: The measure, Senate Joint Resolution 8, was introduced by Sen. Robbie Morris (R) in the House.
- March 3, 2026: Senate approved the measure in a vote of 33-0, with one member not voting. Two (2) Democrats and 31 Republicans voted yes; one Republican did not vote
