Three of the nine seats on the West Windsor-Plainsboro Regional School District school board were up for by-district general election on November 8, 2016. Incumbent Yu Taylor Zhong defeated Shrenik Dagli, Russel Melville, and former board member Todd Hochman for the Plainsboro seat. In the race for the West Windsor seat, incumbent Louisa Ho and Carol Herts won the two seats up for election by defeating incumbent Scott Powell, Deborah Marinsky, Mirna White, and former board member Richard Kaye.[1]

The West Windsor-Plainsboro school board consists of nine members elected to three-year terms by district. Elections are staggered with three seats up for election each year. The general election was held on November 8, 2016. There was no primary election.[2]

Candidates for the school board must be 18 years old and registered to vote. They must have resided within the district for at least one year prior to their election or appointment. Candidates cannot concurrently hold office as mayor or as a member of the governing body of a municipality within the district. Board members cannot have been convicted of a felony. There are no term limits.[2]

West Windsor-Plainsboro Regional School District is located in central New Jersey in both Middlesex County and Mercer County. The county seat of Middlesex County is New Brunswick. Mercer County's seat of government is Trenton. In 2015, Mercer County and Middlesex County were home to an estimated 371,398 and 840,900 residents, respectively, according to the United States Census Bureau.[7][8] The district was the 19th-largest school district in the state in the 2013–2014 school year and served 9,724 students.[9]

Demographics

Both Middlesex County and Mercer County outperformed New Jersey as a whole in terms of higher education achievement from 2010 to 2014. The United States Census Bureau found that 39.8 percent of Mercer County residents and 40.7 percent of Middlesex County residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree, compared to 36.4 percent of all state residents. Mercer County's median household income was $74,118 and Middlesex County's was $80,118, compared to the statewide average of $72,062. Mercer County's poverty rate was 11.8 percent and Middlesex County's was 8.3 percent, while it was 10.8 percent statewide.[7][8]
