Two seats were up for election on the Adams County School District 50 Board of Education. Two candidates sought election to the board on November 5, 2013. Joe Davidek and Ryan McCoy ran unopposed and won the two at-large seats.
About the district
Adams County School District 50 is based out of Westminster in Adams County, Colorado. This suburban district serves students in Westminster as well as portions of Arvada and Denver. According to the 2010 US Census, Westminster is home to 106,114 residents.[1]
Demographics
Westminster outperformed the rest of Colorado in median income based on the 2010 U.S. Census. The average household income in Westminster was $64,016 compared to $57,685 for the state of Colorado. The poverty rate in Westminster was 11.1% compared to 12.5% for the entire state. The U.S. Census also found that 33.3% of Westminster residents aged 25 years and older earned a bachelor's degree, compared to a 36.3% rate in Colorado.[1]

Method of board member selection
The Adams County Board of Education consists of five members who are elected at-large to four-year terms. There was no primary election, and the general election took place on November 5, 2013. Two seats were up for election in 2013, and three seats were on the ballot on November 3, 2015.
Candidates in Adams County School District 50 had to file nominating petitions containing at least 50 valid signatures with the Adams County Clerk by August 30, 2013 in order to qualify for the ballot. State law required candidates to submit disclosures of contributions and expenditures to comply with the Fair Campaign Practices Act on October 15, November 1 and December 5.[3]
Voters within the district were able to request mail ballots from the County Clerk by October 15. These ballots were sent out to registered voters who submitted requests by the deadline starting on October 15. Mailed ballots had to be dropped off at 12 approved locations throughout Adams County by 7:00pm local time on November 5. Voters could also mail their ballots back to the County Clerk though ballots had to arrive by November 5.[4]

What was at stake?
Incumbents Marilyn Flachman and Sharon Whitehair did not file for re-election in 2013. Flachman was ineligible to run for another term because of Amendment 17 to the Colorado Constitution, which says that no "elected official of any...school district....shall serve more than two consecutive terms in office." Newcomers Joe Davidek and Ryan McCoy ran for two seats on the board on November 5, 2013.

Additional elections on the ballot
This election shared the ballot with two statewide measures. Residents of Westminster cast ballots for Mayor and three seats on the City Council.[7] Voters decided on a ballot measure dealing with excise taxes and sales taxes on marijuana sales in Colorado, which passed. They also voted to reject Amendment 66, which was an initiated constitutional amendment to raise the state's income tax in order to increase state funding for public school districts.
