Two of the five at-large seats on the Westminster Public Schools Board of Education in Colorado were up for nonpartisan general election on November 7, 2017. In their bids for re-election, incumbents Joe Davidek and Ryan McCoy defeated challenger Gay Lynn Jameson.[1][2]
The school district was previously called Adams County School District 50. The board of education voted to change the name in February 2016.[3]

Elections
Voter and candidate information
The Westminster Board of Education consists of five members elected at large to four-year terms. Elections are held on a staggered basis so that two or three seats are up for election every odd-numbered year in November.[4]
To qualify to run for school board, candidates had to be residents of the school district and registered voters for a minimum of 12 consecutive months before the election. They also could not have been convicted of a sexual offense against a child. To get on the ballot, school board candidates had to file nomination petitions containing 50 signatures of eligible voters in the school district by September 1, 2017.[5]
Colorado voters were allowed to register to vote through election day.[6] Photo identification was not required to vote in Colorado.[7]

The 2017 Westminster Board of Education election was the first time in three election cycles that there were no open seats on the ballot. Both incumbents whose terms were up for re-election in 2017 ran to retain their seats and won re-election. In the district's 2015 election, two of the three incumbents ran to retain their seats, which guaranteed one newcomer was elected to the board. In the district's 2013 election, no incumbents ran, and two newcomers were elected to open seats.

Westminster Public Schools is located in Adams County in north-central Colorado. The county seat is Brighton. Adams County was home to an estimated 498,187 residents in 2016, according to the United States Census Bureau.[12] The district was the 21st-largest school district in the state in the 2014-2015 school year and served 10,161 students.[13]
Demographics
Adams County underperformed compared to Colorado as a whole in terms of higher education achievement between 2011 and 2015. The United States Census Bureau found that 22.2 percent of county residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree, compared to 38.1 percent of state residents. The median household income in the county was $58,946, compared to $60,629 statewide. The poverty rate in the county was 12.8 percent, while the state as a whole had a poverty rate of 11.5 percent.[12]
