Three states—Georgia, Pennsylvania and South Carolina—feature special elections for state legislative seats on Tuesday, August 11. In several instances, a special election runoff follows on the heels of an earlier race that failed to yield a candidate who received more than 50 percent of the vote.

Georgia:
Voters in Georgia will see special election runoffs for Georgia House of Representatives seats in Districts 80, 146 and 155. In District 80, Republican J. Max Davis will face off against Democrat Taylor J. Bennett after the two advanced past two other Republicans during the special election on July 14.

District 146 features Republicans Shaw Blackmon and Larry Walker battling for votes one final time after neither received more than 50 percent during the July 14 election. Similarly, Horace Hudgins (R) and Clay Pirkle (R) are vying for the vacant seat in District 155 after bumping fellow Republicans Scott Lowell Downing and Sherry Miley out of the running after the July 14 special election.

Pennsylvania:
In District 174 of the Pennsylvania's House of Representatives, voters will decide whether Ed Neilson (D) or Tim Dailey (R) will fill the seat left vacant by John Sabatina, Jr. (D), following his election to the Pennsylvania State Senate. Joanna McClinton (D), Charles Wilkins (R) and Tracey Gordon (I/Tracey Gordon Party) are vying for the vacant seat in House District 191. The seat is vacant following Ronald Waters' (D) resignation on June 1, 2015, after he pleaded guilty to accepting $8,750 in cash payments in exchange for political actions.[1]

The seat in House District 195, another seat that is vacant following a scandal, will be filled by either Donna Bullock (D) or Adam Lang (R) after Tuesday's election. Michelle Brownlee (D) resigned the seat on June 8, 2015, after pleading guilty to conflict of interest. She was the fourth Pennsylvania official to plead guilty following a bribery sting.[2]

South Carolina:
In South Carolina's House District 106, Russell Fry, Sanford Cox Graves, Tyler Servant and Roy Sprinkle faced off in the Republican primary on July 28. Since no candidate received more than 50 percent of the vote, the top two vote-getters, Fry and Servant, will meet in Tuesday's runoff election. No Democrats filed to run in the district.

The seat is vacant following Nelson Hardwick's (R) resignation on May 12, 2015. Hardwick relinquished his seat saying he wanted to focus on his health. However, his announcement came on the heels of an investigation by House Speaker Jay Lucas (R) that was launched after a female staffer filed a complaint against Hardwick for "inappropriate conduct."[3]
