A special primary election for District 14 of the Tennessee House of Representatives will take place Wednesday, August 12. Karen Carson and Jason Zachary face off in the Republican primary to determine who will fill the seat left vacant following Ryan Haynes' (R) resignation on May 27, 2015. Haynes gave up his seat after being elected chairman of the Tennessee Republican Party. No Democrats filed to run for this seat.[1]

Voters' opinions on how to best approach healthcare and education will likely determine who wins the seat, as the candidates disagree on these two topics. Carson supports Gov. Bill Haslam's (R) initiative to expand federal healthcare to the uninsured and has, in the past, "supported Common Core for higher standards." Zachary, on the other hand, supports neither program, saying he is wary of "grossly expanding government."[2]
