Tim Carpenter and Mark Borkowski are facing off in a nonpartisan special election on August 18 to determine who will fill the seat in Milwaukee's 11th Aldermanic District. The seat was formerly held by Joe Dudzik, who died in a motorcycle accident on May 22, 2015.[1][2]

Carpenter is serving his fourth term as a Democrat in the Wisconsin State Senate. He previously served in the state assembly from 1985 to 2003.[3] Borkowski, who considers himself a conservative, is currently in his sixth term as Milwaukee County Supervisor, serving District 11.[2][4]

The candidates see eye-to-eye on several issues: they both oppose Milwaukee's $124 million streetcar and contend the Bucks arena financing arrangement is a bad deal for taxpayers, believing the city's $47 million part of the arrangement should be amended via legislation.[2]

The two have taken swipes at each other as well. Borkowski has described Carpenter as "tax-and-spend," while Carpenter has criticized Borkowski for his vote on a controversial 2001 pension plan that increased benefits for county employees.[2]
