Voters in three states—Mississippi, Pennsylvania and Washington—head to the polls on August 4 to decide a variety of elections, including those for state legislatures, a local ballot measure and school board seats.

Mississippi:
In Mississippi, voters will cast ballots in contested primaries for seven of 11 executive offices up for election in November, including governor, lieutenant governor and treasurer. Just two of the seven races—those for Mississippi Public Service Commission in the Central and Southern districts—feature no incumbents. Mississippians will also vote in primaries for seats in the Mississippi House of Representatives and Mississippi State Senate.

Pennsylvania:
Pennsylvania is holding special elections for Pennsylvania House of Representatives seats in Districts 87 and 161. In District 87, Bob Charles (D) and Greg Rothman (R) are vying for the seat left vacant following Glen Grell's (R) resignation to become the executive director of the Public Schools Employee Retirement System (PSERS). Meanwhile, in District 161, Paul Mullen (R), Leanne Krueger-Braneky (D) and Lisa Esler (R, write-in) will face off in the special election to fill Joe Hackett's (R) former seat. Hackett resigned after deciding to explore a return to the district attorney's Criminal Investigation Division.[1][2][3][4]

Washington:
Washington state features a broad range of elections on August 4. Special election primaries for Washington House of Representatives seats in Districts 9a and 30b will take place, as will city council elections in Seattle. The Seattle City Council elections will be the first under the city's new district system. All nine members of the council were previously elected at-large. This year, seven will be elected from seven new districts, and only two will be elected at-large. Six incumbents are running for re-election: five in districts and one at-large.

Primary elections to narrow the field of contenders are also being held in eight of Washington's largest school districts: Battle Ground, Bellingham, Edmonds, Northshore, Richland, Seattle, Spokane and Tacoma. Races where more than two candidates filed for a given seat must hold primaries to reduce the number of general election candidates to the top two vote recipients.

Also in Washington, voters in the city of Sunnyside were scheduled to vote on an advisory question asking whether to allow recreational marijuana production and sales within city limits.
