Special state legislative elections will be held in Connecticut and Massachusetts on Tuesday, February 2.

In Connecticut's House of Representatives District 121, Joe Gresko (D) will face off against Susan Barksdale (R) for the seat left vacant by Terry Backer (D), who died from brain cancer on December 14, 2015.[1]

Three special primary elections have been scheduled in Massachusetts. In the Democratic and Republican primaries for the Twelfth Essex District of Massachusetts' House of Representatives, voters will decide who will advance to the March 1 special election. That seat is open following the resignation of Leah Cole (R) on September 28, 2015. Thomas Walsh, James Moutsoulas and Craig Welton will face off in the Democratic primary, while Jaclyn Corriveau and Stephanie Peach will face off in the Republican primary.[2] The seat in the Ninth Plymouth District of Massachusetts' House of Representatives is vacant following the election of Michael Brady (D) to the state Senate in November 2015. Gerry Cassidy, Shaynah Barnes and Shirley Asack will face off in the Democratic primary. Regardless of who wins that contest, there will also be a general election for the seat on March 1. No Republicans filed to run in the district primary election.[3]

The seat in the 3rd Worcester District in the Massachusetts House is also vacant following Stephen DiNatale's (D) election to be the mayor of Fitchburg in the November 2015 general election. Stephan Hay, Kimatra Maxwell and Joseph Byrne will face off in the Democratic primary. The winner would also appear on the March 1 general election ballot and could face a third-party or write-in candidate. No Republicans qualified to run in the February 2 primary.[4]
