Special state legislative elections will take place in Minnesota and Oklahoma on Tuesday, January 12. In Minnesota, a Republican primary election in State Senate District 35 will be held to determine which candidates will advance to the special election on February 9. The seat is vacant following the resignation of Branden Petersen (R) on October 31, 2015; Petersen cited long hours and low pay as his reasons for leaving. Republicans Jim Abeler and Andy Aplikowski will face off in Tuesday's election. The winner will join Roger Johnson (Democratic-Farmer-Labor) and Zachary Phelps (Legal Marijuana Now) on the ballot for the special election in February.[1]

Following a November primary, voters in Oklahoma will decide whether Democrat J.J. Dossett or Republican David McLain will fill the vacancy in State Senate District 34. The seat has been vacant since August 2015, when Sen. Rick Brinkley (R) resigned after he admitted to stealing $1.8 million from the Better Business Bureau. Dossett defeated Lisa Franklin in the Democratic primary, while McLain triumphed over Mark Williams, John Feary and Chuck Daugherty in the Republican contest.[2]
