Special state legislative elections will take place in Alabama and Georgia on Tuesday, January 19, 2016. Voters in Alabama's House District 80 are heading to the polls for a primary election, with the general election to be held on April 12, 2016. The seat has been vacant since the death of Lesley Vance (R) on November 3, 2015.[1] Vance notably switched parties from Democratic to Republican after the 2010 election, which secured a supermajority for Republicans in the chamber.[2] Chris Blackshear, James McGill and Tommy Pugh are running in the Republican primary. If none of them receives a majority of the votes, a special primary runoff election will be held on March 1.[3] The winner will face Kenicia Battle, who is unopposed in the Democratic primary.[4]
A trio of Democratic candidates are running to replace Simone Bell (D) in the Georgia House District 58 special election. Bell resigned from the seat on November 13, 2015, to take a job at Lambda Legal. Kwame Thompson, Park Cannon and Ralph Long III are competing for the seat, which Bell first won in a special election in 2009.[5][6]
