A special runoff election will be held in District 118 of Texas' House of Representatives on Tuesday, January 26. Tomas Uresti (D) will face John Lujan (R) after they were declared the top two vote-getters among a slate of six candidates during the special election on November 3, 2015. Uresti and Lujan beat two Democrats and two Republicans, including Gabe Farias (D)—whose father, Joe Farias (D), vacated the seat in August 2015.[1][2]
Uresti is a Harlandale Independent School District board trustee and a legal assistant at the law office of his brother, state Senator Carlos Uresti (D).[3] Lujan, meanwhile, is a retired firefighter who currently works at an IT company. His second run for office may prove an uphill battle for the Republican, as the district has long been considered a Democratic stronghold.[4][2][5]
