In an election on January 5, voters in Rhode Island's State Senate District 11 will decide which of three candidates will fill the vacant seat. The seat was vacated by Christopher Ottiano (R) in October 2015 when he resigned to take a job at the Neighborhood Health Plan of Rhode Island.[1]

A slate of three Democrats and three Republicans faced off in the primary on December 1, with James Arthur Seveney winning the Democratic vote and John Pagliarini coming out as the top Republican. Seveney is no stranger to public office. The son of a former state senator, he has served on the Portsmouth Town Council since 2004 and served one term as its president.[2]

Pagliarini has spent time in both the public and private sectors, working most recently as a real estate attorney. He also served as an appointee of then-Governor Donald Carcieri (R) on the State Properties Committee.[2]

These two major party candidates will join independent candidate Gregory Steven Blythe on the ballot on January 5. Blythe, a store manager who has been involved in local youth sports programs, said, "I don’t want people to support me because I’m a Democrat or Republican. ... I want them to support me because they trust me to do the best job. I’d rather be the eyes and ears of the district.”[3]
