A single runoff election in Miami on November 17 will determine who represents District 2 on the city council. The seat was hotly contested, with nine challengers vying for the spot left vacant by the end of Commissioner Marc Sarnoff's term. Teresa Sarnoff, Marc's wife, and Ken Russell advanced to the runoff and will face each other on Tuesday.
Teresa Sarnoff is the founder and president of End Homelessness Now Inc., a nonprofit dealing with homelessness in Miami. She has highlighted curbing violent crime, providing more alternative methods of transportation and improving the economy as the themes of her campaign.[1]
Russell, a water sports wholesaler who was initially considered an underdog in the race, explained why he is seeking a seat on the city council, saying, "I'm not your typical politician. I'm your neighbor. I'm an entrepreneur. I'm a father. I got involved with Miami politics when I learned that the City had dumped toxic waste in the park in front of my home with no intention of removing it. [...] I want the residents to breathe easy, knowing that their government is open and collaborative. I want to do this because I Love Miami."[2]
Russell placed first in the November 3 general election, earning 41.3 percent of the vote. Sarnoff received 23.5 percent of the vote and edged out third-place finisher Graciela Solares by 86 votes.
