The city of Memphis, Tenn., held elections for mayor and city council on October 8, 2015. However, city council races for Districts 2, 3, 4, 5 and 7 head to runoff elections on November 19, 2015, with no candidates receiving majorities of the general election vote.

In total, 60 candidates filed to run for the 13 seats on the city council. Every race was contested. Seven members of the council ran for re-election, while six members chose not to run. Of those six, councilmen Harold B. Collins of District 3 and Jim Strickland of District 5 filed instead to run for mayor. The most crowded city council races included District 7 with nine candidates, District 4 with eight, and Districts 3 and 5 with seven candidates each. Unsurprisingly, all of these districts, in addition to District 2, are now faced with runoff elections.

In District 2, Frank Colvett Jr. faces Rachel Knox at the Thursday runoff; District 3 voters will choose between Patrice Jordan Robinson and Keith O. Williams; a runoff between Doris DeBerry-Bradshaw and Jamita E. Swearengen takes place in District 4. Worth Morgan and Dan Springer square off in District 5; and Anthony Anderson will attempt to unseat incumbent Berlin Boyd in District 7.

Major issues during the 2015 general election included urban blight, population loss and crime. To read about more of the important issues in this election, click here.
