Heading into today's primary, New York Governor and potential 2016 presidential candidate Andrew Cuomo (D) has struggled to unify Democrats behind his candidacy for a second term in office.
Challenger Zephyr Teachout (D), a first-time candidate who teaches constitutional and property law at Fordham Law School, has managed to garner endorsements from both the state AFL-CIO and the Public Employees Federation. Both endorsed Cuomo's 2010 campaign.[1][2] Teachout's running mate, Tim Wu, also received an endorsement from The New York Times over Cuomo's running mate, Kathy Hochul. Cuomo is not expected to lose in either today's primary or in the November general election. He has, however, made two unsuccessful attempts to remove Teachout from the ballot on the basis that she did not meet a five-year residency requirement for ballot placement.[3][4]
In nearby New Hampshire, former U.S. Sen. Scott Brown is facing a crowded field of opponents for the Republican senate nomination as he seeks to unseat Jeanne Shaheen (D). Nine other Republicans are competing for the party's nomination, including another former senator, Bob Smith, who served two terms from 1990 to 2002. Brown, who lost his 2012 re-election bid in Massachusetts to U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren, is considered the front-runner in the race.[5]
Although big names such as Cuomo and Brown are drawing most of the attention in today's elections, the most competitive races may be further down the ballot.
In New Hampshire's House of Representatives elections, a staggering 70 Republican incumbents are facing primary opposition, while only 24 Democrats confront the same challenge. Democrats currently control the chamber by a margin of 213 to 173 with another 14 vacancies. If the vacancies are split according to the party that last held the seat, the partisan divide heading into the election is 220 to 180 in favor of the Democrats.
Both chambers of the New Hampshire State Legislature are considered 2014 battlegrounds by Ballotpedia, due to the recent elections that have taken place in the state since 2010. Republicans won a majority in the State Senate in 2010, while Democrats wrested back control of the House of Representatives in 2012. The only other two states in the country where both state legislative chambers are considered battlegrounds are Iowa and Pennsylvania.
Elsewhere on the ballot, Delaware, Massachusetts and Rhode Island are all hosting races for congressional, state executive and state legislative offices. New York is only having state executive and state legislative elections, while California will hold a single school board recall election in the Alisal Union School District.
