Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel.

Elections on February 24 will consist of races in California, Connecticut, Illinois and South Carolina. Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel faces four challengers in an election that seems destined for a runoff.[1]

Forty-three of 50 incumbents are running for re-election to the Chicago City Council. A total of 184 candidates are vying for the 50 seats. Seven incumbents are completely unopposed. Chicago voters will also see three citywide advisory referendums on their ballots. The measures ask the opinion of the voters on the following three issues: "Fair Elections" through campaign finance reform to limit special interest spending, mandatory paid sick leave and required counseling for city employees convicted of domestic violence.

In California, the Burbank Unified School District is holding an at-large primary election for three seats. Two incumbents did not seek re-election, leaving incumbent Roberta Grande Reynolds competing in a field with five challengers. The district is in the process of searching for a new superintendent, since Jan Britz has announced she will be retiring at the end of the 2014-2015 school year. In Santa Cruz, voters are casting their votes in an all-mail election where they will decide on a bond issue, parcel tax and appropriations limit for Lompico Water District.

State legislative special elections in Connecticut were called following the appointment of three legislators to various positions. Races are being held in District 23 of the Connecticut State Senate, as well as District 107 and District 129 of the Connecticut House of Representatives. Candidates were nominated by parties rather than chosen in primaries.[2]

A special primary election will be held for District 63 of the South Carolina House of Representatives following the retirement of Kristopher Crawford (R) on December 9, 2014.[3]
