One election will take place in New Hampshire on Tuesday to determine whether Republicans will maintain a three-seat majority in New Hampshire's 20th Rockingham State House District. One seat is vacant following Dennis B. Sweeney's (R) resignation on April 6, 2015, a mere five months after he was first elected.
According to Sweeney, he resigned because he was too busy with his job and could not dedicate enough time to his position.[1] Elaine Andrews-Ahearn (D) and Rio Tilton (R) are vying for the opening. Andrews-Ahearn served in the New Hampshire House of Representatives, representing Rockingham 37 from 2012 to 2014. Tilton, on the other hand, is a 19-year-old college student. According to the Union Leader, "Tilton said he decided to enter the House race after a growing interest in local politics, including being involved in his community."[2]
The special election was originally scheduled for August 25, with a primary election on July 7. However, since only one person from each party registered for the primary election, the special general election for this seat will be held on the date that what was originally scheduled for the primary election. The filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was May 15.
