Today, Ballotpedia is covering elections in five states, as candidates face off in Colorado, Mississippi, New Jersey and South Dakota, while select California residents weigh in on local ballot measures and four city council seats.

There will be a new face in the U.S. House of Representatives as a special election for Mississippi's 1st Congressional District goes to a runoff. Trent Kelly (R) and Walter Zinn (D) compete today to succeed the late Alan Nunnelee (R). Kelly is thought to have the upper hand, as the district tends to favor Republican candidates.[1]

In New Jersey, voters will participate in a large number of legislative primary elections. There are a whopping 80 races for the New Jersey General Assembly today, as Republican and Democratic primaries take place in 40 districts. The state Senate is holding a special primary for District 5, where Democrat Nilsa Cruz-Perez is running unopposed. Cruz-Perez was appointed to the seat on December 15, 2014, to replace Donald Norcross (D), who resigned after he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives.[2]

At the local level, Californians in Riverside and Yucca Valley will vote on medical marijuana dispensaries. Sonoma County residents will see a sales tax increase on their ballots, while some Sacramento residents will vote on whether new taxes and bonds should be implemented to fund a $150 million streetcar project.

Finally, in South Dakota, the Rapid City Area School District has two races on the ballot, alongside a question that would allow the district to collect additional property taxes. Incumbents Matthew Stephens and Laura Schad are up for re-election, challenged by Richard Kriebel and Katharine Thomas, respectively. A third seat will not appear on the ballot, as incumbent Sheryl Kirkeby drew no opposition in her bid for re-election.
