It will be a busy day for voters across the nation, as elections in nine states are scheduled for May 19, 2015. These races will feature prospective governors, state supreme court justices, legislators, mayors and more.
One of the most prominent races is the Republican primary for governor of Kentucky. Agriculture Commissioner James Comer and fellow contender Hal Heiner have sparred over the use of negative ads in the race, and Comer has accused Heiner supporters of spreading accusations that he abused ex-girlfriend Marilyn Thomas. Will Scott is the third candidate competing for a chance to replace the term-limited current governor, Steve Beshear. Besides the races for governor and lieutenant governor, there will be primaries for four other statewide executive offices in Kentucky, as well.
Another highly anticipated race is the crowded primary for the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. Twelve candidates are running for three open seats on the state's highest court. The Republican and Democratic parties boast six candidates apiece. Control over the court is at stake as there are currently two vacancies and a tenuous 3-2 Republican majority. Candidates raised $2.5 million for the primary, leading some to question ethical standards and money in judicial elections. This is the first competitive election for the court since 2009.
Pennsylvania ballots also include 46 other contested judicial seats. A special election for the state's 5th Senate District features John Sabatina, Jr. (D) and Tim Dailey (R) vying to succeed Mike Stack (D), the new lieutenant governor. At the municipal level, six Democrats will compete for a spot in the Philadelphia mayoral race, both Philadelphia and Pittsburgh will hold primary elections for city council, and school board primaries will be held across the state.
A special legislative election in New Hampshire pits Maureen Mann (D) against Yvonne M. Dean-Bailey (R) for a seat in the state's House of Representatives, 32nd Rockingham District.
On the other side of the country, California will hold a special legislative election for the 7th Senate District, featuring Democrats Susan Bonilla and Steve Glazer. The seat is vacant following Mark DeSaulnier's (D) election to Congress.
The Los Angeles Unified School District has a general election on May 19, with four incumbents seeking re-election. Meanwhile, voters in Buena Park, Calif., face a local ballot measure that would require voter approval for any new building development.
Jacksonville, Florida, will hold a general election for mayor, as Alvin Brown (D) pursues a second term. Eight city council races will also be decided.
A recall election in Arizona seeks to remove Rhonda Brooks from the Golden Valley Fire District Board following complaints that she tried to force Fire Chief Tom O'Donohue out of office. The attempt to remove Brooks from office has been nearly a year in the making.
Ballotpedia is covering two notable ballot measures in Oregon—an advisory question that seeks to prove voter support for marijuana facilities in Brownsville and an initiative in Benton County banning GMOs.
School districts in Idaho, New York and Oregon that are among America's largest school districts by enrollment will also hold elections for their boards on May 19.
