Whitver wins special election for District 35

Iowa held a special election Tuesday to fill a vacancy in District 35 of the Iowa State Senate. The vacancy was created when Larry Noble (R) was appointed to be the commissioner of the Iowa Department of Public Safety on December 16, 2010.[1]
In Tuesday's election, small business owner, coach, and law student Jack Whitver ran on the Republican ticket.[2] John Calhoun, a small business owner and director of the Polk City Economic Development Corporation, ran on the Democratic ticket.[3] With 31 of 32 precincts reporting, Whitver was elected by a margin of 4771 to 2739.[4]
Partisan impact
Since neither party was able to pick up additional legislative seats in the special election, the senate's partisan balance was unaffected.
