Wiley Runnestrand was a 2016 Democratic candidate for District 18 of the Ohio State Senate.[1]
2016
Runnestrand's campaign website highlighted the following issues:
“
|
Innovation
- Simplifying interactions with the government when starting a business and operating one.
- Creating true competition and removing favoritism between large corporations and our state government.
- Funding the most innovative concepts early and providing resources to make the start-up process easier for those willing to invest themselves in their innovative ideas.
Education
- Finding ways to inject technology and foster personal engagement between teacher and student is our best chance at a brighter future for all of us.
- This can’t happen unless we can attract the best and brightest to educate our children. Being an educator is an honorable profession that should rank high in our esteem. But in reality, our teachers often lack the support (institutionally and personally) to be their best. We need to create a system that nurtures and encourages innovation among our teachers.
Energy
- Finding ways to support this industry while ensuring safety is a top priority for our economic expansion.
- Developing ways for energy companies to invest in our local economy.
- Creating safe drilling environments and accountability for the energy industry.
Social Issues
- The government should have no say in marriage rights. These are personal questions that must be answered between the individual, their God if they choose to worship, and their church. The government’s intrusion into marriage only leads to the support of one faith over others. A tyranny our founders rightly feared.
- Women’s Health is a complex set of issues that has driven partisan politics for too long. I fully support a women’s right to choice and her right to medical care. No matter what side of these issues you fall on, there are ways to reduce the number of abortions. Sex education and inexpensive preventative measures have greatly reduced the number of unwanted pregnancies. We need to continue to support these programs and the women in our lives; no matter the health care decisions they make for themselves and their families. Beyond women’s health, we need to support programs for young men to understand their responsibilities and teach them to take ownership of their actions toward women in all circumstances.
- Race has been a difficult issue for our region and country over the last couple years. We need to have honest conversations about race and demand fairness in our legal system. Prejudice in arrest, conviction and incarceration rates are unacceptable. We have to do better to make sure the rights of a citizen are extended to everyone equally.
Gun Violence
- I cannot support the federal government’s efforts to expand background checks. Between the Patriot Act and other breaches of privacy perpetrated by the federal government, I believe it would be an error to encourage further invasions of privacy. However, I believe that every state needs to address gun violence and promote gun safety.
- I will promote and develop programs that highlight the safe use of firearms.[2]
