William Marsh Acker Jr. was a federal judge on senior status with the United States District Court for the Northern District of Alabama. He joined the court in 1982 after being nominated by President Ronald Reagan. Acker died on June 21, 2018.[1]

Early life and education

A native of Birmingham, Alabama, Acker graduated from Birmingham-Southern College with his bachelor's degree in 1949 and from Yale Law School with his LL.B. in 1952.[2]

Military service

From 1946 to 1947, Acker served as a private first class in the U.S. Army.[2]

Acker was nominated by President Ronald Reagan on July 22, 1982, to a seat on the United States District Court for the Northern District of Alabama vacated by Judge Frank McFadden. Hearings on Acker's nomination were held before the Senate Judiciary Committee on August 11, 1982, and his nomination was reported by U.S. Sen. Strom Thurmond (R-S.C.) on August 17, 1982. Acker was confirmed by the unanimous consent of the U.S. Senate on August 18, 1982, and he received his commission the same day. He elected to take senior status beginning on May 31, 1996. Under provisions of 104 Stat. 5089, no successor to this position was appointed.[2][3][4]
