As of 2016, William "Bill" Clapp was a co-founder of Global Partnerships, a Seattle-based investment firm that aimed to support "sustainable social enterprises who deliver high-impact products and services for people living in poverty."[1]
Career
Clapp consolidated his family's network of businesses under a single investment holding company, Matthew G. Norton Co., in 1979. He worked as CEO of the company until his retirement in 2001.[3][4][5]
Clapp co-founded Global Partnerships, an international investment firm, in 1994 alongside his wife, Paula. The firm sought to support "sustainable social enterprises who deliver high-impact products and services for people living in poverty" through impact investing and microfinance. Clapp became CEO of the organization in 2001 and, as of 2016, served as a member of the group's board of directors.[1][3]
Clapp co-founded the Seattle International Foundation, a nonprofit foundation that aimed to reduce global poverty with a focus on Central America, in 2007. He served as the foundation's board chair. Clapp also co-founded Global Washington, an association of international development organizations in Washington state, and the Initiative for Global Development, a nonprofit organization that sought to encourage business investment in Africa in order to reduce regional poverty. Clapp was the top donor in support of the 2016 Washington Advisory Question about the Rights of Corporations and Money as Free Speech (Initiative 735), which proposed to urge the Washington state congressional delegation to put forth a federal constitutional amendment that reserves constitutional rights for people and not corporations.[2]
