William Darden
William Darden was a senior Article I federal judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces. He joined the court on November 13, 1968, following a nomination from President Lyndon Johnson. His term ended on December 29, 1973. He served as chief judge of the court from 1971 to 1973.[1] He passed away on June 12, 2016.[2]
Early life and education
Born in Union Point, Ga., Darden attended Emory University and Harvard University. He later earned his J.D. from the University of Georgia.[3]
Military career
Darden enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1943 and served in the Pacific during World War II. Darden was discharged in 1946.[3]
Professional career
After law school, Darden worked on the staff of U.S. Senator Richard Russell (D-Ga.) for twenty years before his elevation to the federal bench. After leaving the federal bench in 1973, he became vice president at Reynolds and the Association of American Railroads.[3]

Darden began his service in 1968 on a recess appointment. He was later nominated by President Lyndon Johnson to the United States Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces on January 9, 1969, to fill the remainder of the term of Judge Paul Kilday. Darden's nomination was reported on January 14, 1969. Darden was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on January 14, 1969, by unanimous consent.[4]
Darden later served as chief judge of the court from 1971 to 1973. His term expired on December 29, 1973. He was succeeded on the court by Judge William Holmes Cook.[3][1]
