William Ditter
J. William Ditter, Jr. was an Article III federal judge for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. He joined the court in 1970 after being nominated by President Richard Nixon (R). He served on senior status from October 19, 1986, to April 7, 2019. His service ended when he died.
Early life and education
Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Ditter graduated from Ursinus College with his bachelor's degree in 1943 and later graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Law School with his Law degree in 1948. Ditter also served as a Captain in the U.S. Navy Reserves 1943 to 1946 and again from 1951 to 1953.[1]
Professional career
Ditter was a law clerk for the Montgomery County, Pennsylvania Court of Common Pleas from 1948 to 1950 and also served as an Assistant District Attorney for Montgomery County in 1951 and again from 1953 to 1955. Ditter was a private practice attorney in the State of Pennsylvania from 1955 to 1963. Ditter served as a prosecutor, First Assistant District Attorney for Montgomery County, Pennsylvania from 1956 to 1960 before becoming a Judge in the Court of Common Please for Montgomery County, Pennsylvania from 1964 to 1970.[1]
Judicial career
Eastern District of Pennsylvania
Ditter was nominated to the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania by President Richard Nixon on September 28, 1970 to a new seat created by 84 Stat. 294, which was approved by Congress. Ditter was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on October 8, 1970 and received commission on October 15, 1970. He assumed senior status on October 19, 1986. His service ended on April 7, 2019, when he died.[1] Ditter was succeeded in this position by Robert Gawthrop.
