Noteworthy events

Disciplinary charges for driving while impaired

On May 13, 2011, the Indiana Commission on Judicial Qualifications filed disciplinary charges against Hughes, alleging that he violated the code of judicial conduct. The account filed by the commission detailed his October 2010 misdemeanor arrest in North Carolina for the charge of driving while impaired. That charge was downgraded to reckless driving, to which Hughes pleaded guilty to in April 2011.[6] The Indiana Supreme Court appointed three judges to conduct Hughes' public hearing on the charge of judicial misconduct.[6]

On May 27, 2011, the Indiana Supreme Court sanctioned Hughes with a public reprimand. In its published judicial disciplinary action on Hughes, the court stated that Hughes had pleaded guilty to the charge and was placed on probation for 12 months contingent upon enrollment in an alcohol and drug assessment program or counseling, and not operating a vehicle within eight hours of drinking alcohol. Hughes also paid $443 in fines and costs. The court further stated that Hughes did not use his position as a judge to interfere with his arrest and had reported his arrest to the Indiana Commission on Judicial Qualifications the day after. Hughes was also required to pay the costs associated with the disciplinary proceedings.[7]
