William T. Lawrence is a federal judge on senior status with the United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana. He joined the court in 2008 after a nomination by President George W. Bush (R). He assumed senior status on July 1, 2018.[1]

Early life and education

Lawrence was born in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1947. He earned a bachelor's degree from Indiana University in 1970. He earned a J.D. from the Indiana University School of Law in 1973.[1]

Professional career

Lawrence was a private practice attorney in Indiana from 1973 to 1997. Lawrence served as a public defender with the Marion County Superior Court in Indiana from 1974 to 1983. He served as master commissioner with the Marion County Circuit Court from 1983 to 1997. He served as a judge with the court from 1997 to 2002.[1]

Judicial career

Southern District Court of Indiana

On the recommendation of U.S. Senator Dick Lugar, Lawrence was nominated to the United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana by President George W. Bush on February 14, 2008, to a seat vacated by John Tinder as Tinder was elevated to a judgeship on the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals. Lawrence was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on June 26, 2008, on a Senate vote and received commission on June 30, 2008.[2] He assumed senior status on July 1, 2018, and officially retired from the court on June 30, 2019.[3]

Federal magistrate judge

Lawrence was a federal magistrate judge for the Southern District of Indiana from 2002 to 2008.[1]
