William LeRoy McMurray, Jr.

William LeRoy McMurray, Jr. is a senior judge on the Georgia Court of Appeals. He was appointed to the court by Gov. Busbee on May 3, 1976 and he served as a Presiding Judge (1979 - 1983 and 1985 - 2000) and the Chief Judge (1984) before his retirement to senior status in 2000.[1]

He temporarily returned to the Georgia Court of Appeals on August 10, 2010 to work part-time until the end of the September 2010 term or until a replacement for former Judge Debra Bernes takes office.[2]

Biography and Education

McMurray was born in Rock Hill, SC on April 11, 1925. After serving in the U.S. Army in World War II, he received his undergraduate degree from Georgia Southwestern College and his law degree from Mercer University's Walter F. George School of Law. He then returned to the Army to serve in the Korean Conflict. Once honorably discharged, he spent six years as an FBI special agent.[1]

Career

McMurray began his legal career as a lawyer in Cordele, GA. He was the Cordele City Attorney until he was elected Superior Court Judge of the Cordele Judicial Circuit (8th District). He worked in this capacity until his appointment to the Court of Appeal in 1976.[1]
