William Charles Lee was a Article III federal judge for the United States District Court for the Northern District of Indiana. He joined the court in 1981 after being nominated by President Ronald Reagan. He served as chief judge from 1997 to 2003 and assumed senior status on February 3, 2003. He left office on January 20, 2024, when he died.[1]

Early life and education

A native of Indiana, Lee graduated from Yale University with his bachelor's degree in 1959 and graduated from the University of Chicago Law School in 1962.[1]

Professional career

Lee started his legal career as a private practice in Fort Wayne from 1962 to 1970, while close to the same time he became the Deputy prosecuting attorney for Allen County from 1963 to 1969. In 1970, Lee was appointed by President Richard Nixon as U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Indiana a post he served until 1973 when he returned to private practice for eight years before being appointed to the Federal Bench in 1981.[1]

Judicial career

Northern District of Indiana

On the recommendation of Senators Dan Quayle and Dick Lugar, Lee was nominated by Ronald Reagan on July 1, 1981, to a new seat created by 92 Stat. 1629 which was approved by Congress. Lee was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on July 27, 1981, and received commission on July 28, 1981. Lee served as chief judge for the United States District Court for the Northern District of Indiana from 1997 to 2003. Lee assumed senior status on February 3, 2003. He left office on January 20, 2024, when he died.[1]
