Heading into the election, Ballotpedia rated this race as safely Republican. Incumbent Ron DeSantis (R) sought re-election in 2016. He defeated William McCullough (D) in the general election on November 8, 2016. DeSantis defeated G.G. Galloway and Fred Costello in the Republican primary, while McCullough defeated Jay McGovern, George Pappas, and Dwayne Taylor to win the Democratic nomination. The primary elections took place on August 30, 2016.[2][3]

Campaign themes

2016

The following issues were listed on McCullough's campaign website. For a full list of campaign themes, click here.

  • E Pluribus Unum: One of my family posted a picture of the modern flag with the original pledge of allegiance super imposed. Immediately the responses came that some would never post this photo, because it did not include “under God”. It seemed they either didn’t understand it’s historical significance or didn’t approve of the first version. The term “under God” has become a lightning rod of division.
  • The Zika Legislative and Natural Disaster: One of the unquestioned benefits of a strong national government is the ability to share the cost of a natural disaster across the entire nation. The cost of Superstorm Sandy was too much for New Jersey alone. There is a natural disaster looming and our legislators are playing politics with the funds to prepare. Not only could preparation contain the cost of this disaster, but it could protect the lives and health of thousands.
  • Bill's View: Stabilizing the National Debt: Recently I received this request for my stance: “As a concerned voter, I would like to know what your plan is to stabilize the national debt and secure the economy and our future. As the long-term debt continues to grow, it will hurt our economy, and investment in critical programs like education, infrastructure and R&D will continue to shrink.
  • On March 4th the Alabama Supreme Court Schooled the US Supreme Court: After reading a release from Liberty Counsel of Florida one could surmise this was the action taken by the Alabama Supreme Court. “Today, in a 170-page ruling, the Alabama Supreme Court rejected the U.S. Supreme Court’s marriage opinion by issuing its own Judgment in favor of Liberty Counsel’s Petition for Mandamus. In the petition, Liberty Counsel demanded on behalf of its Alabama clients – Alabama Policy Institute (“API”) and Alabama Citizens Action Program (“ALCAP”) – that the state’s probate judges obey Alabama’s Constitution and laws. On March 4, 2015, the Alabama Supreme Court ordered the probate judges to immediately cease issuing same-sex marriage licenses.”
