William Nielsen
William Fremming Nielsen is an Article III federal judge for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Washington. He joined the court in 1991 after being nominated by President George H.W. Bush. Nielsen served as the chief judge of the court from 1995 to 2000 before assuming senior status on May 30, 2003.
Early life and education
A native of Washington State, Nielsen graduated from the University of Washington with his bachelor's degree in 1956 and his juris doctorate in 1962. Nielsen also served as a U.S. Air Force First Lieutenant from 1956 to 1959.[1]
Professional career
Nielsen began his career as a law clerk for federal district judge Charles Powell for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Washington from 1963 to 1964 before spending the rest of legal career as a private practice attorney licensed in the State of Washington from 1964 to 1991.[1]
Judicial career

Nielsen was nominated by George Bush on March 21, 1991 to a seat vacated by Robert McNichols as McNichols assumed senior status. Nielsen was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on May 9, 1991 on a senate vote and received commission on May 14, 1991. Nielsen served as the chief judge of the court from 1995 to 2000 before assuming senior status on May 30, 2003.[1] Nielsen was succeeded in this position by Lonny Suko.
