Phillips was a 2017 Republican special election candidate for District 1 of the Michigan House of Representatives. Phillips was a 2016 Democratic candidate for District 9 of the Michigan House of Representatives. He was defeated in the primary election on August 2, 2016. He was also a 2012 Democratic candidate for District 9 of the Michigan House of Representatives.

A special election for the position of Michigan House of Representatives District 1 took place on November 7, 2017. A primary election took place on August 8, 2017. The filing deadline was April 25, 2017.[1]

The seat became vacant on February 7, 2017, when Brian Banks (D) resigned after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor that involved falsifying financial information in order to apply for a loan.[2]

Tenisha Yancey defeated Sandra Bucciero, Ronald Diebel, John Donahue, Burgess Foster, Kirkland Garey, Keith Hollowell, Justin Johnson, Gowana Mancill Jr., Pamela Sossi, and Washington Youson in the Democratic primary. Mark Corcoran defeated William Phillips in the Republican primary. Yancey defeated Corcoran and Libertarian Gregory Creswell in the special election.[3][4]

Elections for the Michigan House of Representatives took place in 2014. A primary election was held on August 5, 2014, and a general election was held on November 4, 2014. The signature filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was April 22, 2014. Fred Durhal III defeated Cynthia Johnson and four others in the Democratic primary. Dorothy Patterson was unopposed in the Republican primary. Durhal defeated Patterson in the general election.[8][9][10][11]
