Purcell was appointed to the North Carolina State Senate in July of 1997.
Purcell is a retired pediatrician.

Purcell was unopposed in the primary election on May 4, 2010.[2]
2008
On November 4, 2008, Purcell was re-elected to the 25th District Seat in the North Carolina State Senate, besting Janice Abernathy (R).[3] Purcell raised $143,678 for her campaign, while Abernathy raised $5,555.[4]
