William Schneider (Maine Attorney General)
William Schneider was a 2012 Republican candidate for Attorney General of Maine. Elected to the office by a Republican majority that controlled both houses of the State Legislature in 2010, he was the first Republican named to the statewide public position in decades.[1] Prior to his appointment, Schneider served as a member of the State House and was an Assistant United States Attorney.
Schneider was a 2012 Republican candidate who sought election to the U.S. Senate from Maine. Schneider was defeated by Charles Summers in the Republican primary on June 12, 2012.[2]

Healthcare reform
Schneider, a former state representative who was elected as state attorney general by the State Legislature in December 2010, stated that he was weighing his options concerning involving the state in challenging the constitutionality of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. He said that there are "no provisions in the constitution that give the federal government that kind of power."[5] Schneider ultimately joined the lawsuit against the ACA. In a 5-4 decision, the United States Supreme Court upheld the individual mandate as a tax and struck down the requirement for state Medicaid expansion.[6]

Schneider ran in the 2012 election for the U.S. Senate, representing Maine. Schneider sought the nomination on the Republican ticket.[8] He faced Scott D'Amboise, Richard Bennett, Charles Summers, Debra Plowman, and Bruce Poliquin in the June 12 Republican primary. Schneider was defeated by Charles Summers in the Republican primary.[2] The Democratic primary was between Benjamin Pollard, Matthew Dunlap, Cynthia Dill, and Jon Hinck. Cynthia Dill won the Democratic nomination and will face Summers in the general election, along with third party candidates Andrew Ian Dodge, Aaron Marston and Angus King.[2]
