An effort to recall Mayor William Shearon in Bradenton Beach, Florida from his position was launched in December 2014.[1] The recall election took place on May 19, 2015.[2] Shearon was recalled.[3]

Recall election

Shearon faced Vice Mayor Vice Mayor Jack Clarke on the recall election ballot.[4] A citizen filed an injunction against Clarke seeking to disqualify him because Clarke did not submit his written resignation ten days before qualification began. A judge denied that request.[5]

Opposition

In a statement, Shearon defended himself from the recall attempt. "To today's date, I have never been charged -- legitimate charges. I've repeatedly asked for the charges and responded to the ones that he (Vice Mayor Jack Clarke) brought up in September," he said. Shearon cited his record as mayor, including the reopening of the Historic Bridge Street Pier, a new cell phone tower, updated city website and increased staff transparency.[6]

Petitioners had 30 days to collect 100 signatures in order to move the recall forward.[1] They turned in 119 signatures on January 14. Those signatures were approved, so they needed to collect 115 signatures, which is equal to 15 percent of the city's 763 eligible voters, within 60 days.[7] Supporters turned in 123 signatures.[8]
