William B. Shubb is a federal judge for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of California. He joined the court in 1990 after being nominated by President George H.W. Bush.

Early life and education

Born in Oakland, California, Shubb graduated from the University of California-Berkeley with his bachelor's degree in 1960 and his J.D. degree in 1963.[1]

Professional career

Shubb was a law clerk for federal judge Sherrill Halbert in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of California from 1963 to 1965. In 1965, Shubb became the Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of California until 1971. Shubb served as the Chief Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of California from 1971 to 1974. In 1974, Shubb entered into private practice in California from 1974 to 1980. President Jimmy Carter appointed Shubb as U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of California, where Shubb served from 1980 to 1981. In 1981, Shubb resumed private practice work until his appointment to the federal bench in 1990.[1]

Judicial career

Eastern District of California

On the recommendation of U.S. Senator Pete Wilson, Shubb was nominated to the United States District Court for the Eastern District of California by President George Bush on August 3, 1990 to a seat vacated by Raul Ramirez. Shubb was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on September 28, 1990 on unanimous consent and received commission on October 1, 1990.[2]

Shubb served as the chief judge of the court from 1996 to 2003 before assuming senior status on November 1, 2004.[1]
