William Sullivan (Connecticut)
William J. Sullivan was a justice on the Connecticut Supreme Court. He was first nominated to this court by Governor John G. Rowland in 1999. Rowland then nominated him to the position of chief justice in December of 2000.[1]
He also served as a judge trial referee for the Waterbury District Superior Court.[2]
Education
Justice Sullivan was born on March 12, 1939, in Waterbury, Connecticut. He received his B.A. degree from Providence College in 1962 and his J.D. degree from Marshall-Wythe School of Law (part of the College of William and Mary) in 1965. After this, he served as an Army Captain through 1966. He was married and had four sons.[1] Sullivan died in 2022.[3]
Professional career
Justice Sullivan began his legal career as a lawyer in his hometown of Waterbury, Connecticut. He also worked as Civil Service Commissioner (1974-1975) and Corporation Counsel (1976-1978) for the City of Waterbury. In 1978, he was appointed a superior court judge and in 1997 he was nominated to the Appellate Court. He then joined the Supreme Court in 1999.[1]
