William Tarbell was a 2016 Republican candidate who sought election to the U.S. Senate from Nevada. Tarbell was defeated by Joe Heck in the Republican primary.[1]

Tarbell was a Republican candidate for Governor of Nevada in the 2014 elections.[2]

The race for Nevada's open U.S. Senate seat was one of Ballotpedia's nine competitive battleground races in 2016. Former Nevada Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto (D) defeated U.S. Rep. Joe Heck (R), a doctor and brigadier general in the Army Reserve who served in Iraq, and four third-party candidates in the general election to win retiring Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid’s (D) seat. Her victory on November 8, 2016, made her the first-ever Latina elected to the United States Senate.[3][4][5]

In her victory speech, Cortez Masto commented on her status as the first Latina elected to the Senate, saying, "It's not just about making history. Don't you think it is about time that we had diversity in the U.S. Senate? Don't you think it's about time that our government mirrors the people we serve every day?"[6]

Tarbell ran for election to the office of Governor of Nevada. Tarbell lost the Republican nomination in the primary on June 10, 2014.[7][2] The general election took place on November 4, 2014.

  • Public Fear: Recently, I traveled through Northeastern Nevada. Everywhere I went two types of fear emerged. First, among small business owners the margins tax (on the Nevada ballot as the Education Initiative) has provoked tremendous apprehension and a determination to cut back on business conducted in order to avoid the tax, if passed. Second, a general dread about the future of our state and our country pervades every community.
  • Bundy family and BLM: Many important lessons can be learned by reflecting on the recent standoff between the Bureau of Land Management and the Bundy Family. Perhaps most important is the intensity of the reaction triggered by the massive show of force presented by the BLM. People coming from near and far with such speed and determination suggests that we are near a threshold of impatience with federal pressure of all kinds.
  • Abortion: I am opposed to abortion except to save the mother's life, for example ectopic pregnancy. The importance of this statement is underlined by the conviction of abortionist Gosnell in Philadelphia for murder and recent revelations of Planned Parenthood late-term abortion practices. Uninhibited abortion has led to unacceptable outcomes.
  • Common Core: Everywhere I have visited, I have encountered teachers and educators who are opposed to Common Core. I objected to the formation at the national level (the educators on the committee did not support the end product) and I object to the implementation at the state level.
  • Immigration: There is a limit on the number of persons we can safely and expeditiously welcome into our country. For sometime, we have allowed a million legal immigrants to enter our nation per year. When undocumented immigrants and refugees are added to that number we are faced with a staggering task of integrating them into our society, especially when many of them do not wish to do so.
