Will Newton was a 2015 candidate for District 7 of the St. Petersburg City Council in Florida. The general election took place on November 3, 2015. Winthrop “Will” Newton lost the general election on November 3, 2015.

Biography

Newton was born in St. Petersburg. He worked as a firefighter EMT from 1990 to 2013, also serving as an instructor for the International Association of Fire Fighters in the U.S. and Canada.[1] He has additional experience as a life insurance and mortgage brokerage agent.[2]

Campaign themes

Newton's website outlined the following campaign priorities:[3]

  • To raise and protect the standard of living for all citizens, and that starts with working to make our neighborhoods safer.
  • To attract sustainable employment that can bring more District 7 citizens into the middle class.
  • To foster increased home ownership in District 7 through financing arrangements with the city.
  • To fully fund summer jobs for youth and expand programs to include after-school jobs.
  • To rid District 7 of its negative reputation and promote the productivity and success of its citizens.
  • To ensure city planning is not just a developer-led urban revitalization project, but is inclusive of the public.
  • To protect taxpayers’ great investment and sacrifice to secure Major League Baseball, making certain the Tropicana Field site yields the highest benefit possible to the people of St. Petersburg.[4]

The city of St. Petersburg, Florida, held elections for city council on November 3, 2015. A primary election took place on August 25, 2015. The filing deadline for candidates who wished to run in this election was June 22, 2015. Four of the eight city council seats were up for election. In the District 7 primary, Lisa Wheeler-Bowman and Winthrop “Will” Newton advanced past Sheila Scott Griffin, Aaron Sharpe and Elvert Lewis Stephens.[5] Wheeler-Bowman defeated Newton in the general election. Incumbent Wengay M. "Newt" Newton Sr. did not run for re-election.[6]

Newton is the brother of former Councilmember Wengay M. "Newt" Newton Sr. He has served as a neighborhood association president and as vice president of the Florida Professional Firefighters organization.[1] He is a member of First Baptist Institutional Church.[2]
