Wisconsin Congressman makes history with impeachment of Judge Porteous
April 20, 2010
Brookfield, Wisconsin: House Judiciary Committee member Jim Sensenbrenner from Wisconsin is making history in his involvement with the impeachment trial of Louisiana federal judge Thomas Porteous. With the trial started, the long time House Judiciary Committee member has become the only elected member of Congress in its 200-plus year history to be a manager in four impeachment trials.[1]
As one of the five managers selected for the trial, Sensenbrenner is responsible for preparing the case for the 12 member U.S. Senate panel presiding over the trial, along with cross-examining witnesses.[2]
After the impeachment of Judge Porteous on March 11, 2010, Sensenbrenner said: "It is an honor for me to serve as a House Manager in the impeachment of Judge Porteous. Judges take an oath to uphold the law and their robes do not grant them immunity. Judge Porteous clearly violated the laws, and I hope we can work to restore the trust of the American people by quickly removing him from his position".[1]
Sensenbrenner was selected as a House Manager for the impeachment trials of federal judges Walter Nixon in 1989 and Samuel Kent in 2009, along with the impeachment trial of President Bill Clinton in 1998.[3]
