Green Wix Unthank was an Article III federal judge for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Kentucky. He joined the court in 1980 after being nominated by President Jimmy Carter. Unthank served on senior status from 1988 until his death on June 25, 2013.[1]

Early life and education

A native of Kentucky, Unthank served in the US Army Airborne Infantry Division from 1940 to 1945 before graduating from the University of Miami School of Law with his J.D. in 1950.[2]

Professional career

Unthank started his legal career as a judge in the Harlan County Circuit Court from 1951 to 1957. From 1957 to 1966, Unthank was a private practice attorney in the State of Kentucky before becoming the Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Kentucky from 1966 to 1969. From 1970 to 1980, Unthank served as a Commonwealth's (State's) Attorney for the 26th Judicial District of Kentucky.[2]

Judicial nominations and appointments

Eastern District of Kentucky

On the recommendation of U.S. Senator Wendell Ford, Unthank was nominated by President Jimmy Carter to a new judgeship created by 92 Stat. 1629 which was approved by Congress. Unthank was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on June 18, 1980 and received commission on June 18, 1980. Unthank later assumed senior status on June 14, 1988, where he served until his death in 2013.[2] Unthank was succeeded in this position by Karl Forester.
