Wyoming Chief Justice petitions Legislature for pay raises
February 15, 2012
Wyoming: On Feb. 13, Marilyn Kite, Chief Justice of the Wyoming Supreme Court, asked the state Legislature to give judges and court employees a raise. The Legislature is expected to cancel pay raise plans due to falling natural gas prices that have hurt state revenues. Justice Kite argued that providing justice to citizens should take priority over other optional projects. She pointed out that judges and their staff were not granted pay raises last year when $7.1 million in pay raises was approved for the executive branch. "And now an entry level attorney can go to work for the attorney general's office for $4,000 more than they can go to work for the Supreme Court," she explained.[1] A bill has been proposed to increase judicial salaries.
Mead also asked that the judicial mandatory retirement age of 70 be repealed.[1]
