Wyoming chief federal judge to retire

Wyoming: Chief Judge William Downes, of the United States District Court for the District of Wyoming, has announced that he will retire on July 24, 2011, his 65th birthday, after 17 years on the bench. He was first nominated to this court in May of 1994 and has served as Chief Judge since 1999. Some of his notable cases involved allowing banned political activist Bill Ayers to speak on-campus at the University of Wyoming and the 1995 release of wolves into Yellowstone National Park.[1]
