I am Xavier Cason, and I am running for the District 4 Board of Education position in Durham, NC. I bring experience at every level of public education, serving as an educator in Durham for many years and as a Board of Education member from 2016–2020. In addition to my classroom and Board service, my experience also includes community-based and civic leadership working alongside schools and families. That full arc has given me a clear understanding of how decisions are made, how they are implemented, and how they are experienced by students, educators, and the public.
  • I am running to bring steady, disciplined governance to Durham Public Schools at a time when stability and public trust matter more than ever. I believe the Board’s role is to set clear priorities, provide strong fiscal oversight, and hold the superintendent accountable for results. My experience as a former Board member and my work since then have strengthened my commitment to transparency, thoughtful decision-making, and follow-through so families, staff, and taxpayers can rely on the system.
  • I bring experience at every level of public education—from teaching in Durham classrooms, to serving on the Board of Education, to working in nonprofit and civic leadership alongside schools and families. That full arc gives me a practical understanding of how Board decisions are implemented and experienced on the ground. I am committed to aligning policy with practice so investments in staffing, safety, and academic support translate into real improvements for students.
  • Strong student outcomes are built through collaboration—between educators, families, community partners, and local government. I support public schools that are safe, well-resourced, and responsive to the needs of students, while advocating for fair state funding and responsible local stewardship. My campaign is focused on improving academic achievement, supporting educators, and ensuring students graduate prepared for college, careers, or service.
I am most passionate about public policies that strengthen public education through stable funding, effective governance, and meaningful community engagement. This includes early childhood education, educator recruitment and retention, student wellness and school safety, and policies that close opportunity gaps through strong implementation rather than isolated programs. I am also deeply committed to fiscal responsibility and transparency, ensuring public resources are aligned with student outcomes and community priorities. Across all of these areas, I value collaboration between schools, families, community organizations, and local government as essential to long-term success.
