An effort to recall 14 members of the Yakama Nation Tribal Council was brought to a special general council meeting on October 12, 2022. Recall supporters needed to collect 25 signatures in order to call the meeting. Supporters gathered 346 validated signatures.[1]
Five tribal council members were recalled during an October 2022 special session: Delano Saluskin, Raymond Smartlowit, Virgil Lewis, Dana Miller and George Selam.[2]
The targeted council members have been accused of misuse of Yakama Nation Land Enterprise tribal funds. It has been alleged that they gave out pay increases and bonuses while layoffs and furloughs related to the COVID-19 pandemic were occurring in other divisions.[1]
Path to the ballot
Recall supporters collected 346 signatures to call a special general council meeting. If 250 voting tribal members agree to the recall, the target members may be removed.[1]
Ballotpedia covered 35 coronavirus-related recall efforts against 94 officials in 2022, accounting for 13% of recalls that year. This is a decrease from both 2020 and 2021. COVID-related recalls accounted for 37% of all recall efforts in both 2020 and 2021. In 2020, there were 87 COVID-related recalls against 89 officials, and in 2021, there were 131 against 214 officials.
