This is the November 21, 2016, edition of a daily email sent from November 2016 to September 2017 that covered Donald Trump's presidential transition team, potential cabinet appointees, and the different policy positions of those individuals who may have had an effect on the new administration. Possible nominees
President-elect Trump hosted a number of potential high-level appointees at Trump Tower in New York City today, including former Texas Governor Rick Perry, Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin, former Labor Secretary Elaine Chao, former Massachusetts Senator Scott Brown, and former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich.
- Perry has been rumored as a potential pick to lead the Department of Defense, Agriculture, Commerce, or Energy.
- Fallin’s name has been floated as a possible Secretary of the Interior.
- Chao, who has not been rumored as a potential appointee, endorsed Trump during his presidential run and served on his campaign’s Asian Pacific American Advisory Committee.
- Brown is seen as a potential Secretary of Housing and Urban Development or Secretary of Veterans Affairs. He confirmed that Trump was considering him for the VA job today.
- Gingrich, a prominent Trump surrogate on the campaign trail, is rumored to be in line for Secretary of State, the Interior, or Health and Human Services.
Tulsi Gabbard
In addition, Trump hosted Democratic Representative Tulsi Gabbard (Hawaii). While The Washington Post does not consider Gabbard “a serious candidate” for a position in Trump’s administration, CNN reported that she “is being considered for jobs at the Defense Department, State Department and the United Nations.” During the election, Gabbard initially stepped down as vice chair of the DNC and endorsed Bernie Sanders.
Agency Landing Teams
Trump announced a second wave of assignments to what the transition team calls “Agency Landing Teams.” These are groups of transition employees and volunteers who meet with current officials in government agencies to begin the transition process. They share information between the Obama and Trump administrations. Trump announced the first wave of 25 landing team members Friday and expanded the list by 18 Monday afternoon. Monday’s additions were the transition’s liaisons to offices in the Department of Commerce, the Social Security Administration, the Department of the Treasury, the Federal Communications Commission, the Small Business Administration, and the U.S. Trade Representative.
