Youngest man to serve as New Mexico's governor dies
July 12, 2013
Santa Fe, New Mexico: David F. Cargo (R), who served as Governor of New Mexico for two terms in the 1960s, died following an illness. He first won election to the office in 1966 at age 37, making him both the youngest governor in the state's history and only the third Republican to win a statewide election in three decades. Cargo is notable for believing in the film industry as a means of economic development, establishing the first state film commission, and advocacy of tough ethics laws. Other than serving as governor, he was a member of the New Mexico State Legislature from 1962 to 1966, and later ran unsuccessfully for the United States Senate, Congress, and Mayor of Albuquerque.[1]
