My name is Yusuf Haji. I am a father, a husband, a Burnsville homeowner, a journalist, a community mediator, a small business owner, and a changemaker. I have a big heart for people and want to build a strong, diverse, and inclusive community. I’m running for Dakota County Commissioner to represent District 5.

For 15 years, I have worked on bringing civil rights, interfaith dialogue, and understanding to Minnesota. While working for the Minnesota Department of Revenue as an outreach coordinator, I met with and listened to people’s struggles. As a small business owner, I worked to provide our community with needed services while also creating space for the community to flourish.

Dakota County is a great place to live, and I’m grateful to have settled my family here. But the quality of life we've achieved in our Dakota County communities is not yet available to everyone. It’s important we give every family the tools they need to thrive, whether this is the home your family has always known or the home your children will come to know.

Dakota County deserves diverse leadership that is willing to prioritize all of us. Our taxes are not being spent on our community’s needs like housing, youth programs, and community vitality. In order to keep people in Burnsville and Dakota County, we need to invest in public resources.

As your County Commissioner, I’ll work to make this vision a reality. From expanding access to Dakota County resources and investing in infrastructure, to suppo
  • EXPANDING ACCESS TO DAKOTA’S RESOURCES For a long time, Dakota County has been short on resources that our neighboring counties have access to. Even today, many residents in Dakota County don’t have access to healthcare, food, housing, and public transit. The Dakota County Board has a responsibility to expand these resources so that every Dakota County resident has access to them. I believe that no Dakota County resident should be left behind.
  • IMPROVING DAKOTA’S INFRASTRUCTURE Dakota County has some of the worst roads in the state. Some roads have never been paved, while others continue to deteriorate. As your County Commissioner, I will work to invest in infrastructure across the county. Every Dakota County resident deserves to travel on roads that won’t ruin their cars and make their journeys both easier and safer.
  • ENSURING PUBLIC SAFETY AND MENTAL HEALTH Public safety and mental health go hand in hand. Dakota County residents deserve to feel safe and be safe. Residents who are struggling with mental health or are in crisis deserve to have access to resources that can help them. As your County Commissioner, I will make sure that Dakota County continues to invest in our first responders. I will also fight to invest in mental health resources, like treatment centers for residents who are struggling with addiction. I am also passionate about increasing services for residents experiencing homelessness by investing in services that make homelessness rare: rental assistance, transitional housing options, and more.
